Winter Critters – Complete!
Happy Tuesday everyone!
I’ve officially finished Winter Critters, which has been such a fun little project. My mom gave me this quilt kit as a Christmas gift last year, and what a perfect gift it was! Its the ideal size for using the paper piecing technique that I love, combined with some room to practice my free motion skills. I think this is the perfect project for a beginner quilter wanting to explore paper piecing! In fact, I checked, and the kits for this little project are still being sold over at the Quilt and Sew Shop!
I only made a few deviations from the pattern. The little pom-poms and facial features were meant to be sewn using embroidery floss, but I opted to either replace those with fabric, or omit entirely. You can still tell thats a raccoon without beady white eyes stitched on, can’t you?
This project was the first project I’ve had where facing was meant to be used in place of the traditional binding. Searching the internet for some help, I found this great facing tutorial which I recommend checking out if this technique was also new to you. There are even little fabric pockets on the back, from the facing, which I plan to use to easily hang my project. Why sew on a hanging sleeve if you don’t have to?
From start to finish, this quilt probably took me about 15-20 hours. Not bad! The beauty of small projects 🙂
Happy Quilting!
