Quiltography App Review
I’m always on the lookout for ways to simplify the quilting process, and today I’d like to share my thoughts on a newer quilting app for the ipad called Quiltography.
Quiltography is made to help you design quilt patterns, and visualize quilts using fabrics from your stash.
The app has four main tools/sections: Fabric, Block, Quilt, and PhotoQuilt.
Fabric – Allows you to import pictures from your photo library into the app. For each picture, you can assign a name and group as well as a number of additional descriptors. The program even pulls out and labels the top 5 most prevalent colors automatically.
Block – In the block section, there are 186 traditional block templates. You can select from those options, and fill the sections with the fabric prints from your collection.
Quilt – This tool allows you to use those blocks you created and see them repeated. You can make your quilt with your desired dimensions, types of blocks and rotations of those blocks. You can even add sashing and borders.
Photoquilt – This section allows the user to make personalized quilt designs from a photo. All you do is upload a photo to the app, enter the number of color options you would like to have, the number of blocks, and the finished piece size. Voila! You have a pdf will very detailed instructions on how to cut and piece your pixelated quilt.
Overall, I think this is an exceptionally well done app. The instructions are clear and the app is easy to use. Although it is one of the more expensive apps I’ve ever considered buying ($14.99), I do think it was worth the money, and will be even more so when new promised features are added. For example, the ability to design your own block templates would really take this app to the next level.
In order to test the app, I spent about 10 minutes to create these images, using the sample fabrics that came with the quilt.
Added some borders.
This was so easy – great way to visualize a quilt with minimal effort and before cutting up fabric.
My last test was to upload all the fabrics from a 42 piece charm pack that I had (S’more Love). After taking all of the pictures on my phone, naming them and uploading them into the program was a bit tedious. It would have been nice if there was a feature to upload multiple pictures at a time, giving them a name with a numerical identifier. For example “S’more Love 1” “S’more Love 2” etc.
I was able to make a mock-up of how the quilt would look but I think for a quilt so simple, and with so many prints, it would have been easier to do this without the program!
Have you used this app before? Would you? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
