Preppy The Whale Quilt Top
The cutest little pod of whales you ever did see…
Thank you, Elizabeth, for creating such fab patterns. I’m ready to make more! {Pattern: Preppy the Whale by Elizabeth Hartman} I love seeing the finished top for many reasons, but one of them is to put behind some of the little mistakes along the way. I apologize for the low quality photos, but I wanted to give you a little behind the scenes glimpse of this week’s quilty drama. So I told you in my WIP post that I hadn’t quite picked my layer cake with enough variety for my little whales, so I added some solids from my stash.
As I started piecing them together, I noticed that my lighter red wasn’t quite big enough to make a whale. Sad! So I decided to replace it with a maroon color I had left over from my Modern Building Blocks Kit. Problem solved, right? Wrong! I stitched my entire row backwards!
I tooka couple day break from the project to think about what I was going to do to fix the problem. I couldn’t just add a row in the middle because I had already done some of the lower whales, and that would throw everything off. Ordering more fabric was a possibility, but since it takes a few weeks to get to me in Japan, I wasn’t really wanting to wait. {Impatient!} So I decided to completely remove the row and try to raid my stash for some pink/purples. Ahh..Problem solved. Thank goodness – I was beginning to think that 6th row was never going to be finished!
Oh, and more drama. This was my first time using linen for the background, so I’m doing a bit of beginners troubleshooting. I seem to have a slight wave in my borders so I’m considering taking them off and trying again. I’m not sure if it will cause a problem with the quilting or not.
I can’t deny that wonderful linen texture though!
Of course, Boomer is always trying to get in the picture – he knows he’s cute!
I hope you’re all having a wonderful week!
