Plus Quilt for Baby Elijah
In November, our little community here in Japan welcomed a sweet little man into the group. My friend Micki moved here a few months ago and quickly became a dear friend. She decided not to reveal the gender beforehand, so I waited until she delivered precious Elijah to start stitching.
My friend, Becky, and I worked together to create the design, cut all the fabrics and arrange the pieces on the design wall. We decided to make a plus quilt that was primarily solids but has some fun prints to make the design pop. I had some unused layer cake squares in my stash that I wanted to use for some of the plus signs. In order to cut efficiently and use the most of those pieces, I cut 3″ unfinished squares which allowed me enough pieces for one full plus sign and a partial plus sign for the edges.
It’s easy to get lost when you start pulling sections off of the design wall but we got it all together!
I wanted to make the quilt really soft so I quilted it with a large-scale stipple.
My favorite part? The backing! My color choices on the front were inspired by the remainder of my robot print leftover from the NICU quilt I made earlier this year. Link: HERE.
There wasn’t quite enough to completely back the quilt so I wanted to bring the plus sign idea to the back.
The large stipple makes it super crinkly and snuggly once washed. I almost want to make myself a large one! A cozy quilt, a warm cup of cocoa, a lit Christmas tree and snow falling outside….perfection.
I hope it gets lots of love!
