Modern Building Blocks Quilt: Blocks 7 & 8
If you’re planning on making Moda’s Modern Building Blocks quilt in the future, this is an important post for you to save! Why? Because these next two block patterns have errors.
I was clued into the fact that their were errors by this post on Walnut Street Quilts Blog. Thanks for the heads up!! We used different methods for fixing block 8, so I recommend checking her post out too and seeing which one works best for you.
Block 8 is made by piecing diagonal rows (way to make the math tricky!) but I worked it out and the block came out to be 18.16″ square. Thankfully two of my favorite quilty scientists double checked my math for me, just to make sure it was correct, lest I pass on the wrong information to you lovely quilters. Thank you Jessie and Yvonne! I also made a test block to make doubly sure – it was definitely smaller than the intended 18.5″ unfinished block.
Here’s how you fix it:
E: Cut three 5.5″ squares instead of the 4 3/4″ squares (Cut into fourths along the diagonals, as described)
F: Cut two 5″ squares instead of the 4 3/8″ squares (Cut in half along the diagonal, as described)
The outside triangles will be a bit bigger than necessary, allowing us to square up the blocks to perfection!
Sew your rows together, lining up the end triangles as shown.
Trim off the excess dog ears to make piecing easier and to remove unnecessary bulk.
Using the center diagonal as a guide, trim the square to 18.5″ to reveal your perfect block. Yay!
Thankfully, Block 8 is a much easier fix.
Cut block A to 4 3/4″ instead of 4 5/8″ (center square).
Phew, glad that was an easy fix because I really like this one!!
I’m going to keep stitching right along. Hopefully I don’t run into any more errors along the way. Have a great weekend, friends!
