Granny Squares Quilt – Complete!
I finished up the top of this quilt about a month ago, and its been sitting on my shelf tempting me. Well guess what? I finally finished it this morning!
I was really hoping to be able to send off this top to any of my long-arm quilting friends since they do such amazing work. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the budget for this month so I convinced myself go take the plunge and quilt it on my own. That meant practice. Lots and lots of practice sandwiches.
I settled on an all over pattern that I had seen on a few of Elizabeth Hartman’s quilts and thought it would look good on the very linear quilt.
Once I felt comfortable moving on from practice sandwiches to the quilt, I got to basting. One of the bad parts about being in the military, is that you don’t always get to see your house before you’re moving into it. I do really love our house now, but it has one major flaw for this quilter! It’s ALL carpeted. Where’s a girl to baste?!?
Ok…I lied. The kitchen and bathrooms aren’t carpeted but they’re not the ideal spaces (or sizes) for basting. My sweet friend, Liv, has been kind enough to let me do some basting at her house, but this granny squares quilt happened to squeeze into the kitchen in my house. Phew!
After getting it all basted, I started quilting. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. I meant to quilt it on a much smaller scale, but for some reason I started quilting it a lot bigger when I first started. I figured it would be best to be consistent than to change-up the scale. In the end, I’m glad I made that “mistake” because it would have made this process soooo much longer. I was pretty done with FMQ after several hours of it!
But hey, now I can say that I made it all by myself when I force my house guests to look at all my quilts. It’s the price you pay when you visit, people. Just kidding. No, I’m totally serious.
She’s sitting pristinely on the couch, at least until one of the little fur babies decides to curl up on it. Sigh. They’re made to be loved, right?
I have a decent amount of the April Showers fabric left after making two quilts (this one and Raincheck) from the line. Any thoughts on what I should do with the leftovers? I’m considering trying a bag or clutch but 3D scares me!
I hope you’re all having a superb week. Happy Quilting!
