Dreher Wedding Quilt Progress
I’m knee-deep in the Dreher’s Wedding Quilt. All though I’ve run into quite a few speed bumps along the way, all of the appliqué pieces are adhered to the quilt top and ready to be stitched.
First, the bride and I found a sunflower picture (Shutterstock) we both liked. I did some calculations to figure out how to break up the quilt, accounting for all of the signed charm squares.
After that, I used a poster creation program to enlarge the image to my desired quilt size. I printed out the design on regular paper, taping the design back together.
Speed bump #1: I wanted to use raw edge appliqué but that requires a reverse image. Because the image had been blown up and the colors were light, I wasn’t able to see through the back of the paper in order to trace on my double-sided adhesive paper. I thought I was being brilliant when I decided to trace the pattern on the wrong side of the adhesive, and then transfer the design on to the paper side. I did get the design to show up in the correct orientation, but that caused additional problems.
Here’s the lovely Mrs. Angela working on a great lap quilt while I traced lots of petals and leaves! We certainly know how to make a mess!
Speed bump #2: After making 100 and some odd appliqué pieces and attaching them to the fabric, I realized that the ink I used to number my templates could be seen through the sheer fabric! I swear I could feel my heart drop! All that fabric, and all that time wasted. I was blessed to have a friend over that helped me figure out how to move forward in the best way possible. Thank you Angela!
Speed bump #3: Redoing most of the templates was discouraging, but I was able to power through them all. Once complete, how on earth was I going to get all of these little pieces on the quilt, in the right order, without losing track of any?
Somehow a miracle happened and everything worked out! (Thank you, Jesus!) Time to get stitching!
This little guy is my favorite 🙂
I hope you’re having a wonderful Monday! Happy Quilting 🙂
