Craftsy Review: Designing Modern Quilts
Lets talk about Modern Quilting!
Weeks Ringle teaches a unique class on Craftsy, called Designing Modern Quilts. Unlike all of the other craftsy classes I have taken, this class doesn’t give you step by step instructions, but gives a “boot camp in design” in the context of designing modern quilts.
So what is a modern quilt? According to Weeks, modern quilts are “expressive of the time in which we live.”
Although there aren’t construction or technique instructions in the class, there are homework assignments. These assignments, known as explorations, are used to practice the discussed skills. The neatest thing about the craftsy platform, is that you can upload a picture of your exploration for feedback. Weeks will get back to you personally with her thoughts.
I’ve never considered myself to be a terribly creative person, so learning basic design skills was perfect for me! Weeks emphasized the idea that design can be taught!
She covers all of these topics:
- Color Theory
- Scales of Prints
- Solids
- Composition (particular without using traditional blocks)
- Quilting
- Binding
To me, the most inspirational part of the course, was seeing all of her beautiful quilts. I highly recommend checking out her class!
