HST Tutorial: The Strip Tube Method

HST Tutorial: The Strip Tube Method

I hope you’ve been keeping up with my series on making half square triangles.  We’ve moved on to some of the less traditional techniques, so they may be new to you!
HST main

This week we’re making half square triangles from a strip tube.  This technique is GREAT for those leftover jelly rolls strips or scraps from your stash.

There are two different options for cutting up our strip tube.  This first method will allow you to get the most out of your fabric and is perfect for those that like to trim up their HSTs.  The second is for those that want to cut out that pesky trimming process and want to cut their triangles exactly to size.

Cutting Method #1:

Cutting Method #2:  Cutting Exactly to Size

For this example, I am cutting 2.5″ unfinished HSTs.

No matter which trimming method you choose, you’ll have perfect half square triangles! perfect HSTs

This method is a bit tricky to give you all the math for as the HST yield will vary drastically depending on your strip length and half square triangle size.  However, I can tell you how wide your strips should be based on your desired HST size.  As per the last three weeks, the first and second columns show your finished and unfinished HST size.  The third column shows what your strip width should be if you aren’t going to do any trimming.  This is useful for Cutting Method #1 as shown above.  The last column is perfect for those people who want a little wiggle room.  Use that column for Cutting Method #2.

I hope that helps!  Let me know if you have any questions or comments.  Also, feel free to look back at our previous techniques for making half square triangles!
