The Butterfly Quilt – WIP
Last year, Tula Pink came out with the most amazing butterfly quilt made with her acacia fabric collection. Seriously, is this not the coolest quilt you’ve ever seen?
After coveting it, I finally took the plunge and ordered the kit for myself. Man, those fabrics are gorgeous.
I was a bit disappointed in the pattern. I thought that buying a kit would include directions on fabric placement, but unfortunately it did not. After all, I am trying to make Tula’s quilt. So I spend a few days carefully looking at Tula’s photos and writing up my own cutting guide before I got started. There wasn’t enough of some fabrics to recreate it exactly, so I had to make a few substitutions. I guess that makes it my own?
Her patterns are perfect for doing a bit of fussy cutting! I cut out these little circles for the corners of a few blocks.
It worked out well!
Curved blocks are always a bit tricky for me, so I switched to using a glue basting technique which made things a lot easier. Its so much better than a lot of little pins! However, for the tiny little curves, the best option for me was just to work slowly around the curve without glue or pins.
Combining fussy cutting and curves = super cute blocks!
Wednesday, I got all of the main blocks together, and rearranged my design wall. Look! A butterfly!
After filling in the edges with lots of little half square triangles, she’s really taking flight.
I’m putting this project aside for the holiday weekend, and then I’ll work to start piecing it together.
I hope you all have a really wonderful Fourth of July! My parents flew in to visit us and should be here any minute. Can’t wait!
