Swoon Quilt Beginnings
Sam and I have finally made a decision on what quilt she wants as her wedding gift from me! After many long conversations and changed opinions, trial blocks and fabric snafus, the quilting has begun!
I’m making her a swoon quilt, designed by Camille Roskelley. I just love the pattern, and the huge (24″) blocks. Camille tells in her Craftsy Pre-Cut Piecing Made Simple Class about the origins in her design, how it started as a pattern on an antique quilt and grew to be hugely popular. The antique quilt was clearly designed with templates, Y-seams and difficult piecing techniques that lets-be-honest, doesn’t sound like too much fun. Camille was able to modify the block to include lots of half-square triangles and flying geese as well as increase the size. Now, hundreds of people are making their very own swoon quilt!
First, I made a sample block with two beautiful fat quarters that my mother-in-law gave me for Christmas.
Next step: fabric choice. We made a secret board on pinterest to pin some of our potential fabric lines. 82 pins later (no joke), we decided on the new Downton Abbey fabrics. I’m so glad we did! Aren’t they just gorgeous?
I spent a few hours on Tuesday, and most of Wednesday cutting fabric. I even drew my lines for all of the half square triangles and flying geese. Accuracy is key for this block!
This morning I made my first block! Are you swooning yet?
I hope so! Happy Quilting!
